What’s Your Diet? Milk or Meat?

It’s been said that the answers to all of life’s questions are in the Bible. I believe it. Do you? Can you find them?

I remember sitting in church as a youth. The pastor would preach a message that went over my head. I did not really understand what he was talking about much of the time. Perhaps he was trying to give life application, but I did not get it.

I remember opening my Bible as a teenager to read a book from the New Testament for a book report. When I was done reading, I knew the storyline, but I had no life application to go with it. By the time I was 15, I was very hungry spiritually for the Word. I was somewhat starved by the time I was 18.

My father had taken me out of church when I was 13, and although I had attended some on my own when I was older, I never quite caught up to what I needed. I did not know what I did not know. By the time I was in my 20s, my walk was like the world.

I think I wound up walking like the world because I was so weak. I never quite understood there was more than the commitment. I do not remember being taught of a personal relationship with Jesus. I could not grasp life application of scripture because I did not remember or understand any examples I had been shown. There was so very much I did not know. Spiritually, I was a babe on my own.

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14

It is tough for new Christians to walk in the Spirit. Often they are still on milk. They are still trying to learn what scripture says and what a personal relationship with Jesus is all about. They desire the Word.

Spiritual victories over tough ongoing issues sometimes come from the strong meat. We have to go through the milk stage to get to the meat, but we won’t grow spiritually if we are not fed. We need to get fed daily. Much has to be learned from the Word if we are to find the answers to life’s questions. The answers and the spiritual victories are there.

LIFE APPLICATION

Today’s challenge is to look at where you are in your walk. If you are just starting, stick to the commitment you made to Jesus. Know that the spiritual battles you are facing can be overcome through the power of the Holy Spirit. Keep in God’s Word, and you will find answers.

If you are farther along in your walk, ask yourself if you are still on a milk diet. If you are spiritually hungry, perhaps you need to step it up a bit with more life application that will come through spending more time in the Word.
