Things Christians Forget Are Parts of Other Religions

When I was younger, I was interested in my horoscope. I wanted to know more about the paranormal and ghosts. I was interested in E.S.P. I think I knew which line was considered a lifeline in my palm. I thought things concerning the occult were pretty interesting until . . .

I started learning more about the new age movement. I bought Edgar Cayce books. I read some pretty interesting stuff. It was then a friend said, “I don’t think Edgar Cayce was a Christian.”

That put the breaks on it all for me. Although I knew he read the Bible once for every year of his life, I also knew that did not make him a Christian.

I began to take another look at all that stuff I had been dabbling in. I was mortified. There was so much that I had accepted as a good thing or just big fun, but in fact it was far from it.

I had been ignorant and gullible. My curiosity had swept me away.

Those books found their way to the trash dump. I did not want them in my house any more. When I think about how off course I was, I get concerned for the youth of today. I think about the movies and books that are all around them and that have a similar message.

When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Deuteronomy 18:9-12

If you don’t know, a necromancer is one who practices magic or sorcery.

I wish I had spent more time reading my Bible when I was younger and less time poking around in the bookstore for another way to occupy my mind. Perhaps I was looking for the power to bend a spoon or move a book. I did not realize that the source of the power I was seeking just might be Satan. It also never occurred to me that out-of-body experiences were not of God.

Interestingly enough though, there were answers to questions I did not know I had, but I did need the answers to in the other book – the Bible, and Satan cannot do anything without asking permission from my God.

LIFE APPLICATION

Instead of playing around with palm readers, crystal balls, spirits, and the like – run the other way. God said leave it alone. I encourage you to also pay attention to what your family is delving into – particularly your teenagers.

Do you really believe that a horoscope is innocent? Curiosity of the unknown can be a subtle seduction that reaches out to those that are unaware of what they have found – or maybe I should say what has found them.

I encourage you to share what God’s Word says about these things with those you love. Pray for a hedge of protection around them each day,
