Determining When Life Begins – A National Concern

Controversy over when life begins has gone on for years. Does it begin the moment of conception, or at the end of the first, second, or third trimesters? Maybe you believe it begins at birth.

Some folks want to look at things scientifically. Okay, let’s take that route for the moment. I decided to go to various websites for my data. They all seemed to have about the same information on them. Here goes.

  • At the moment of conception, it is already determined that when this baby is born, it will be born human just like you. It cannot change into anything else.
  • Only 18 days after conception, the baby’s heart is beating. 3 days later it is pumping blood through a closed circulatory system.

We usually consider injured people who have no brain waves as brain dead. So, is a person brain alive when brain waves start?

  • Brain waves start at 6 weeks after conception. Some women still don’t even know they are pregnant at this point.
  • 7 weeks after conception, they have documented the baby sucking its thumb. Isn’t that precious?
  • 8 weeks after conception, an ultrasonic stethoscope can pick up the baby’s heartbeat.
  • 9 weeks after conception, the baby can wrap her hand around an object. Can’t you just picture that tiny hand?
  • Also at 9 weeks after conception, everything is in place that the child needs to feel pain – just like you can feel pain.
  • At 14 weeks after conception, that precious little one has fingerprints.

Now let’s look at scripture.

I had always used the passage about Elisabeth being six months pregnant with John the Baptist and Mary going to visit her.

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Luke 1:41

I had also used:

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
Jeremiah 1:5

I noticed something else in scripture this past week.

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
Genesis 17:19

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
Genesis 16:11

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Luke 1:30-31

In all 3 verses, God names the child before the mother is pregnant or before she knows that she is pregnant. WOW, isn’t that cool! God loved His son Jesus that much, and He loves us that much too!

LIFE APPLICATION

Key Focal Verse:

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalms 139:14

Our challenge today is to grasp the miracle of life and that God loved us even before our mother knew we were on the way! He also loves your children, even before you knew you were pregnant!

Let’s continue to pray for revival for our nation. Let’s also pray for us, as a nation, to consider life to be as precious as God does.
