Will Our Glory Turn Into Shame?

I have apologized to the boys several times. I just don’t think we are leaving much for them. America may have seen her better days. It’s not just a matter of economics or even freedom, but the love of God seems to have left her too.

What do you think? What is going to happen if we don’t turn?

As you read through the Bible, you will see Israel turning time and time again from the Lord. From our perspective decades of history – or even centuries – are covered in just a few pages of the Bible. It’s easy for us to look and say, “What were they thinking?” However, they did not have the benefit of a bird’s eye view through time.

I feel like we are just like Israel. God gave us a great nation. We worshipped and adored Him. We depended on Him for guidance during the Revolutionary War. Now, we are a long way from being the nation that we once were. To a large degree, we have turned our backs on God.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
(Hosea 4:6-7)

In Hosea, God told Israel that He would change their glory into shame. He said that He would forget their children. Is that what is ahead for us? Does it surprise you that God would forget their children? Let’s look back toward the beginning of the Bible.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Exodus 20:4-6

The children have always paid for the sins of the parents. Think about it. How often is the child of an alcoholic also an alcoholic? How often is the child of a drug addict born addicted? We could go on and on.

The solution is and always has been a really simple one.

And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:12-14
