Surviving the Pre-Election Debates

Do you feel the tension of the election season in the air? Are you concerned for the direction of our country? Do you wonder what the day after will look like?

I do. I wonder.

As the elections approach, pray for our country. As the accusations and false accusations among politicians run rampant, pray for our leaders. As the debates over politics come closer to home, pray for each other.

As the elections approach, character comes to the surface. Truth comes to light. Lies also run rampant. Propaganda surfaces. It can all get really ugly. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get tired of it all.

On the one hand, I want to know the facts. On the other hand, I get tired of the attacks. When something surfaces as a lie, I shake my head. We truly live in a fallen world.

Have you ever been drawn into a political debate?

Maybe you have a stubborn friend or relative. They just will not vote the way you think they should. They obviously don’t get it, right? They are equally sure you don’t get it. As you discuss the issues, maybe you are shocked by the opinion of others.

If you have ever found yourself in this situation, you know that if you continue it will more than likely escalate. Then what will you do? What will you say? What will they say?

Remember that at the end of the election cycle, these stubborn relatives will still be your relatives. If you like your friends, you will want to keep them around too, right?

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
1 Corinthians 14:33

Over the next few weeks while Satan is stirring the wrath and anger of some, I encourage you to remain calm. Words can hurt. Often they are not easily forgotten. Depending on what those words are, they can impact a life for a lifetime. Some phrases are just not that easily forgotten. They cut too deep.

Remember this verse of scripture?

Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
Mark 13:12

I’ve always found that verse alarming. I’ve always wondered how things could get so out of hand. Yet again, we live in a fallen world. As we turn on the news or pick up a paper, we see tragedy on a smaller scale.

My prayer for you and for our country is the following.

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21

Continue to pray for revival for our country. We’ve been under a great deal of pressure these last few years. Pray that people will seek God in times of need. Pray for peace. Pray for Godly leaders.

LIFE APPLICATION

Key Focal Verse:

Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalms 118:28-29

Today’s challenge is to pray for wisdom during this election cycle. Pray for God to make the truth known to you. Ask God’s direction in your voting. Pray for God’s hand of protection upon our country.
