When I was a teenager and on up into my early 20s, I was so interested in the paranormal or metaphysical. I read lots about it all. I was intrigued by anything mystical that we cannot easily explain. I understand the attraction others may have to talking to the dead or that thing that haunts their home. Of the two, the latter was more my interest.
Perhaps you also have a curiosity about talking to the dead or going to see a medium for a séance? Did you know that God said to have nothing to do with those things?
For as long as I can remember Hollywood has glamorized ghosts, witches and all such things. When I was a child, I did not believe in any such thing as a witch. When I got older I was fooled by the name “white witch”. It’s all in that bucket of things that God says to leave alone.
Maybe you don’t see the big deal about this type of thing. Maybe it seems foreign to you. Maybe you are like I was as a child – totally innocent of such knowledge. Maybe you even think the whole topic is overrated.
God doesn’t think it’s funny. He said it’s an abomination, and He dealt seriously with it in the Old Testament.
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
1 Chronicles 10:13-14
Knowing how much God hates it, I would encourage you to steer clear. If we think about it with the same mindset that God has for it, we would not be the least bit interested in it.
Evidently these folks – mediums and such – have enough interested parties to have group functions. I know of at least one place that calls itself a church. The word church typically applies to a building for Christian worship. As we have seen in God’s Word, this behavior has nothing in common with Christianity.
Today’s challenge is to ask yourself if you are playing with or studying the very things that God says is an abomination to Him. It might seem like such a tiny thing to you, but it’s a serious matter to God. Whatever answers you’d like to have from a medium, you can get those same answers from God. With God, you can be sure of both the source and the answer. Guard yourselves and your families.
